Summer camp provides ample opportunities for people of all ages to enjoy wonderful one-of-a-kind experiences. The number of memories that are created on camp grounds all across America is immeasurable. And that goes for both camp staff and camp attendees alike.

For youngsters, summer camp is an excellent stomping ground for fostering maturity. The building of new relationships with other kids is often heralded as a top feature of attending summer camp. There is an undeniable camaraderie that is formed between children who are part of the same summer camp group. The memories made together last lifetimes.

For young adults who have decided to take advantage of the wonderful opportunity to be camp counselors, the experience is just as rewarding. The ever-important role develops a myriad of skills including how to be a leader, a friend and a confidant.

Perhaps, most importantly, however, camp counselors are given the privilege to be role models. And, it should probably go without saying that America’s youth can use all the role models they can get.

America’s camps need more boys in the camp counselor role.

For decades, young women have famously stepped up to the challenge of becoming camp counselors and have flourished in their roles. Young men have also proven to be great counselors, however, it is noticeable that, in recent years, the girls seem to be outnumbering the guys when it comes to the amount of camp counselor applicants received by camps across America.

Why the shortage of young men applying to be camp counselors? It’s hard to say. It should probably go without saying that there is no shortage of young boys signing up to attend summer camp every year. And, as a young man, the experiences you have already enjoyed can go a long way in helping someone just like you.

Hearing of your stories growing up, learning the rules of the games you introduce and simply having someone to rely on are all huge benefits to young camp attendees who often look up to their elders as inspirations. Your position as a camp counselor, in fact, gives you the opportunity to take on a huge inspiration role – that of a big brother.

Why is the “big brother” role such an important one?

There is a long list of benefits of having an older brother. But, of course, not all of us have been given the opportunity to enjoy those benefits.

When you become a camp counselor, you effectively become a big brother to all of the kids in your group. And, one thing is guaranteed – they will all look up to you!

You’ll teach them self-confidence.

Big brothers often have a tendency to show how “tough” they are to their younger siblings. Through having an older brother, a child can often learn how to overcome obstacles. This will be especially helpful when one of your youngsters falters during a particular game or activity.

Being able to relate to the concept of picking yourself up and dusting yourself off will go a long way in your ability to console a child who is disappointed in his or her supposed inadequacies.

A helping hand from a big brother always goes a long way.

You’ll teach them respect.

Poking fun and teasing others is a traditional part of childhood. And most kids are used to having their parents admonish them for bad behavior.

As a young man, you have a very powerful role in showing kids that it’s cool to be respectful. You’re at the age when a strong understanding of how to be courteous and polite to others is part of what makes you cool.

Having your youngsters bear witness to the ways in which you treat others will have a great influence on them. For many kids, following the lead of someone closer in age than their parents is more desirable.

You’ll provide protection.

At camp, your role as counselor makes you a leader. As far as the kids see it, you’re in charge. And you’re the one who they can turn to when they’re in need of help.

You’re the person showing them the ropes. And while you’re not likely to encounter any serious danger, it is certainly in your job description to keep your kids safe.

Just like a big brother who protects his young siblings from the school bully, your camp counselor role is one that provides youngsters with peace of mind. They trust you to be there for them when they need you.

Why is male bonding so beneficial for young boys?

Believe it or not, your role as camp counselor will have positive health implications for the young boys who attend camp.

A few years back, a German study found that male bonding relieves stress. According to the researchers, men suffer from less anxiety and feel more protected when they are surrounded by other males in social environments.

Being a camp counselor provides you with numerous male bonding experiences that will serve the many young boys at your camp well. Sometimes, it’s just easier for young boys to get along with other boys. This is especially true for youngsters who are on the shyer side.

Everything from team sports to comic books can be found as common interests that can help to grow bonds throughout the summer. And, as studies show, this is a great stress reliever!
